Didn't they rescan some tiles last year? Maybe that's happened because of that.

Is this a high angle track? I clicked on it and it didn't give me credit or negative. Evelyn - ERSTRS

I don't think so on that last one, tiburd, but I did promote 3228668V1 to the Alpha listing. It might be a fiducial mark, otherwise I'd say you've got a winner there.

Evelyn, yours looks just like a power movie! I promoted it as well. Good luck.

Here is my best of Phase 4 movies part deux, I have several nice ones to show. Any comments welcome!

Midnight track??? (I hope):

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =1506030V1

Not sure what that is but something is under the surface:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =7698019V1

Two fiducials?:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =8672260V1

Top right:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =7025478V1

This one looks like a tilted fiducial:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =8313586V1

There are at least 3 white features in this one:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =1440811V1

Fiducial?:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... id=20899V1

Big line at bottom right, not sure about this one:

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =3589898V1

Martin, I promoted five of them: 1506030 (fiducial?), 8672260 (nifty find - pick one - one looks fiducial and the other an HAT), 8313586 (agreed), 20899 (probable fiducial), 7025478 (I don't think so, but I've been wrong before). Regards,

1506030V1 looks like a real Midtnight track to me! Never saw a curved fiducial so far - plus the first and the last part (big remaining particle) doesn't look like fiducial-like.

@Dan, can you say something about this new add-on (89_5A_UNB) in these particular image links, that I saw for the first time in Phase 4? For example by http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... =7025478V1

Code: Select all

Do you mean why is that particular part of the code in the URL twice, or do you mean "what does that code mean?"

Here's the answer I got if you're just asking what's up with the new code:

They are the Heidelberg shots. They are important analogs, difficult to spot just like real ones, and terribly important to the project.

Thanks Dan!

Yes, I've wondered about if this add on means something spezial (i.e. spezial set of movies).
So it's perfectly answered.

Is this track one of those? It's at mid to lower focus and at 325, 300.
HEY ! I just noticed the telltail along with it. That is the Power Movie real track I bet.

Do you mean the original found track from whence the Power Movie was derived? That would make sense, since it's not a Power Movie but looks like an obvious track. I checked the ratings, and it has a high rating from the "Red Team" but no comment from Berkeley. I wonder if that's because they knew it was "man-made." I will double check!

Here's some more info on the Heidelberg Tracks as it was explained to me.

Heidelberg tracks were made at the Heidelberg Particle Accelerator and are "unknown real tracks" in the sense that we don't know where they are in the aerogel, just like real interstellar tracks. They are also as small as the interstellar candidates and are the best analogs done to date. By having these tracks in the movie database, we will not only find essential analogs for matching velocities of the interstellar candidates, but we will also have a separate retrospective way of measuring duster detection sensitivity. The Heidelberg tracks are thus as important to find as the interstellar tracks (even though they are "man-made").

Finally, for those truly interested, they Heidelberg Particle Accelerator is based on a Van der Graaf generator to attain very high velocity impacts (up to about 20 km/s). There is another type of particle accelerator - a "light gas gun" which can go up to about 6 km/s - good for Stardust cometary analogs, but not good for the wider range of impact velocities experienced in the Stardust interstellar collector (2 - >30 km/s). The Van der Graaf technique is however quite difficult because: 1) only certain types of charged particles can be shot, 2) backgrounds are large, and 3) uncertainties of the velocities are large. Thus why it's taken until now to get good analogs for the interstellar tracks.
