Greyscale banding

Post by Lomic »

I hate to be a party pooper, but just wanted to point this out to the researchers incase it's something they can fix - because I'm sure I'm not the only one who has or will notice it:

The calibration movies have extremely visible greyscale banding that is not nearly as visible in the real movies, making it easier to determine when you're viewing calibration material. This is on a CRT monitor so it's not an LCD issue.

This may not be universal but I have noticed it on a majority of movies.

I've noticed this banding when viewing on a CRT too. Doesn't seem to happen on an LCD.
You can't help but pay a little more attention when you know it's a calibration image, which is exactly the opposite of the way it should be.
Sort of defeats the purpose.
I hope the admins can sort this out.

It happens on both my LCD and my CRT (dual monitor setup :D)
Not like you can't tell from the URL, anyways =\
And it doesn't seem to me like ALL calibration movies have it, just most.

You're right. I just clicked No Track on one with no banding, and my score increased.

If the folks in charge are watching, movie 10951A shows the banding we're talking about. It sort of looks like 8 bit greyscale dithered to 6 bit.

Even easier is any movie 9xxx is no track calibration. And movies 1xxxx are most likely calibration movies and most have tracks.

Lomic: Set your number of colors to the HIGHEST it can go, even if it means you temporarily have to run at a lower resolution.

Even at higher color counts you may see some banding,
but it really does not matter, because a track will usually stand out
inspite of the banding.
