For fun I reviewed the tutorial movies. I really question the last two examples. The candidate in the next to the last one has two particals come in to view below the candidate. I could not discern any difference between them. As for the last one, at the area of the candidate the surface is at a different level than the area marked 'surface'. There are numerous particals which I would take as marking the surface there. The candidate is at the surface and fades out immediately below. I think these examples are very confusing and misleading.

I partially agree, I did find them confussing somewhat.
