Thanks, greuti. I wondered about that. I have come to the point where every time I see a track, I expect it to be either a cm or a needle mark. :(

I love the 'shocked' or 'rolling eyes' face on that one Elaine, as if to say "dare call ME a needle-poke and I'll poke you...wherever!":

Image

Dan, you suggest we might get some 50 micron CMs; " - that ought to wake a few people up". Good idea, but would they be new CMs or taken from phase 2, which (I think) were all 'carrot-tracks' rather than HATs, and which may risk sowing further confusion?

So: "Dr. Westphal has removed his "?" from his rating of 6263991V1. It's definitely a needle mark."
But you still don't explain (as was asked) how he knows; for example, by comparison with a fiducial database, and/or by examining overlapping frames from the scanned movie database? If the latter, can we be shown the overlapping movie below?
By the way, I notice that Orion also extends below the bottom of the frame. Can we be shown the overlapping movie there too (yes, I know it came from the pre-fiducial era)?

I presume it was just an ironic coincidence that the decision to insert (?all) fiducials in a midnight orientation was made before it became apparent that midnight tracks could in fact be of particular interest. Might they be inserted at some other angle in future?

This one is not on the Alpha list and its an old 50 micron movie. Its an high angle track but not a midnight track unfortunately. Its located in the top middle.

nitram,

When you post a movie, would you please include the link? Just copy and paste the top line above the movie (browser bar). I've done it for you here:

Thanks, Elaine

Now that I am home I reviewed the movie in question... and it looks like its out of focus. Whatever is there looked like a track with 3 fragments when saw it earlier.

I'm blaming those big black marks  when they were in focus I thought the whole movie was in focus. woops

9713687V1, anyone?
Top right corner, going NNE like other linear surface features, but seems to go slightly deeper; ~495,16 (1/1).

I found an interesting feature in Movie 531874V1. Could it be a track? (possibly a large h.a. track?). I think it is worth further investigation.

Impressive track tritone21!
In overall form it looks like a needle-poke to me, but it will be interesting to see what the team have to say.

I agree with you, John, probably a needle poke. I have entered it on the alpha list. Lets see what Berkeley says. Nice one, tritone21. :)

Hi tritone. Please see this page, which explains a "needle-poke" (or fiducial):
