Thoughts on dusting

Post by McAngus »

Dear Dusters,
I draft a sort of vade-mecum for myself and I like to share it with you.
I have given to it the name "Thoughts on dusting - some considerations during Phase 2".

It has the following contents:

1 ON FOCUSING
1.1 Aerogel transparency – the ball, the stone, the rod
2 THE FOCUS OF THE SURFACE
2.1 Surface location
2.2 “Bad focus”
2.3 Tilted surface
2.4 The “hell” of the wavy surfaces
3 THE FOCUS OF THE OBJECTS
3.1 Focus types
3.2 A brutal semplification
4 THE TRACK
4.1 The origin of the track
4.2 The shapes of the track
4.3 The high angle track
5 THE PERSISTENCE OF THE TRACK
5.1 “BLUE BAR”
5.2 A trivial exercise
5.3 The other face of the Blue Bar
5.4 The persistence of the track
6 CALIBRATION MOVIES
7 CONCLUSIONS
The basic rules
8 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
9 REFERENCES
10 APPENDIX
A small set

You can find it here

I like to thank Dr. A. J. Westphal, for the patience that he had towards me, for his fundamental suggestions, and for the friendly encouragement to put this script in our forum.

Wow! What a huge amount of work!

I hope it can help dusters! Should this also be copied and put into the classroom section as another reference?

I certainly wish I'd had McAngus's guide to hand when starting out way back when.

Shame that 9471219V1 (aka 38843 / ALPHA), referenced in section 5.4: 'The persistence of the track', has turned out not to be interstellar, though I really can't say I'm in the least surprised (see here and here).
