I'm from Kentucky, (USA)

Seems like every day I have a different kind of problem.

Today the site is running very slowly.

Yesterday I kept getting the "you got here....route..." message, and clicks on the buttons didn't add anything to the score.

The day before I couldn't get any response out of the focus bars, but the buttons worked when I clicked " bad Focus"

I wonder what'll be next. Anyone know what's going on?

I think it is about time to take a few days off to see if things get better.
I surely hope so.

I should have added in the first post to let us know how long the problem has been there, because this problem popped up last Friday!!!

Stardust says it is the server having a problem?
Supposed to be fixed by yesterday...???

Thanks for Post,
Howie

Hi Howie,
Yes, the problem is: "lazy server(s)". Nothing else. I doubled my bandwidth recently (for professional purposes). There was no effect on downloading stardust images.
No (your initial topic): There is no basic difference on which end of the earth you reside. It´s all the same worldwide.

Frustration?
In my opinion, there are only 2 possible answers to "frustration":
1. Resignation
2. Motivation

As choice 1 is no choice at all:
Congrats to your "top 100" achievement!

(I always hope, my English is sufficient  )

BTW: There already exists a thread on this topic. Maybe you get more information there.

Well, I just had my new fiber optic system installed today (replacing my DSL), and what a difference! It actually takes me longer to view the movie now than to load it! If anyone is thinking of going that route, I highly recommend! The nice thing about it is that it is not a shared line, so no slowdown with multiple users. Now, if someone could just fix those annoying java script problems!

Hi, marymouse. It's offered in some areas through the phone company (Verizon in my case.) It's only about two years old, at least with this company. Old copper lines are replaced with fiber optic lines. Installation about 6 hours, but free. One time charge of $20. Price about the same as DSL, but 3 times as fast. (5 megs, I think he said.) Not sure how widespread its use is. Also connected to my phone.

Slow Loads

Post by Driven1 »

Servers are still very slow and occasionally skipping pieces of movies causing Java Script errors to pop up. I'm using a cable modem and my current download speed, testing from here in PA to LA is 1250kb (or 1.25 meg per second which is actually not that great). From here to D.C it's 2496kbps. (Testing done from speakeasy.net) So something from east coast to west cost U.S is impeding somewhat but still not the cause of the problem. WorWizard's traces showed that mainly the slowup for him didn't really occur until it hit berkley's system. Even so, that trace wasn't all that bad. (I used to work for a major ISP and know about this stuff)

The problem lies with the servers themselves and it appears that we're all at the mercy of Amazon. Hopefully someone will explain to them that this needs to be resolved ASAP as I and others are becoming a bit irritated and frustrated with the speeds that the movies have been loading over the past week. It's slowing the progress of the program and causing volunteers to rethink working with the program.

I would also suggest that if there are programs like cerealkiller still running that they may be part of the problem. I know that cerealkiller was taken offline but if there are others like it running they may be what's taking the servers down to a crawl by putting an unexpected heavy load on them. I could be wrong but I though I should bring it up. The folks at Amazon should easily be able to tell if this is the case.

For those that asked about the Java Script errors, as I stated in the first sentence of this reply, it is the servers causing the error. What happens is your computer gets a "Script" of what to expect from the server. In this case the script is about each section of the movie being downloaded. If a section of the movie doesn't download for some reason, the java software kicks out an error message because it didn't receive what it was expecting. So every time the server hiccups on a movie and doesn't serve the entire movie, you will get a java script error. In a nutshell, other than being totally annoying, disregard the errors. There's nothing wrong with your computer.

I think I read that Amazon is donating the service - i.e., not making money on it.

Update on Javascript problem for at least myself...

Tonight I got hit with 3 wrong answers on my score for clicking on fake track within 10 minutes till I realized what was happening!!! Be carefull!

Here is what happened...

1st movie loads, I see track, click it, and then second movie hits me with a Javascript error,,,I hit OK, and it goes away and so does the movie with the fake track and I have a wrong answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clicking on the error was like clicking the fake movie in the wrong spot!!!!!!!!!!

Wish this site would go back to about a month ago when everything ran smooth and fast! Between Jav error messages and up and down loading movies speed, is really frustrating, when you are concentrating!!!
