Movie 7768678V1:

Image
Hmm… despite the seemingly connected query-mark-shaped purely surface feature on the right of this movie, the top-mid-right to mid-left feature is not only dead straight, but also focusses progressively with depth over at least 30 frames and contains what looks like typical track debris to me.
An artefactual crack in the aerogel surface, or in fact a genuine particle track? (1st of 2)

PS. Have seen many so-far unrecorded probable vertical or horizontal fiducial needle traces since the related posts above; I've clicked on them but don't wish to clog up the forum with each and every one. To repeat – do the team want these reported to them, and if so in what way?

Keep clicking on them please, but not necessary to report in the forum.

Thanks!

The short answer (I think) is no. Yes we know where they are by Tile, but not necessarily which movies exactly, and not considered worth the effort.

Yes, please continue clicking on these. Not so necessary though to report in the Forum.

Thanks Dan for that clarification regarding probable fiducial tracks.
I wish the team had found an alternative method of establishing alignment, but don't know what that could have been...

In support of the team's policy, I do not think fiducials are wasting dusters' time, for two reasons: First, it's possible that a movie containing a fiducial might also contain a genuine track, so we would not want to exclude movies with fiducials. Second, fiducials are also good training for us, to keep us alert while dusting. I suppose a claim might be made that clicked fiducials may waste the team's time, but it's more efficient than expecting them to remove all fiducials ex ante.

Thanks Tiburd - pretty much sums up our take here as well.

Best,

Hey Guys! I clicked on the bulb this morning, but it didn't count for any points. Nor did it go into Events. What is it?

Thanks, Evelyn, (ERSTRS, SmithES)
Didn't count for points, didn't go into Events. 2013-01-04 at 6.31.01 AM.png

Well, Evelyn, I think you should have scored points on that, but maybe they were so few that you didn't notice? Looks like a five-pointer to me.

Thanks, Caprarom, I'm sure you are right. My Skill had just turned over to 7943. The five pointer wasn't enough to change it---make sense. Skill rating is the only thing I watch, and it surely hurts to miss a "biggie" and see it drop ten points or more sometimes! Thanks, Evelyn (ERSTRS)

As Phase V is winding down, I see many obvious tracks that have not yet received any staff commentary. To help ensure they do not get lost in transition, I offer the following tracks for followup (excluding evident fiduciaries): Movie 7785775V1,
2595670V1, 4189309V1, 4247813V1, 2449495V1, 2595670V1, 6835425V1, 2537251V1, 5419253V1 at x,y = 300, 100; 1753822V1; 7493340V1; 4247813V1; 2303235V1; 7113234V1; 4379277V1; 1411559V1; 1967092V1; 7785775V1; 7654226V1 at x,y = 200, 100; 9057727V1; 5446550V1 at x,y = 430, 230; 8779918V1; 8955430V1; 9510963V1; 1177628V1; 7069441V1; 7113234V1.

In my last post, that should have been "excluding evident fiducials." (Was a long day...)

Interresting stuff Tiburd.

They all look like tracks to me too. Most interresting one in my opinion is 8955430V1. It seem to have a track AND a fiducial, both in the same movie. I've never seen one like this before. Cool.

See you all next week for phase 6!

Martin/Tiburd, that particular movie has been rated a "10" by the Berkeley team. Probably some of the others have been rated also, I didn't check. It may take a while before the team completes their evaluation and adds commentary to the events logs. Dan might shed some light on that process.

Well, for the most part, the team (though not me!) has been deep in their new papers and/or further analyses of the tracks they've found that they like. But with new promising tracks, there's somewhat of a feeling that they won't reveal anything actually new for now (at least what they can get at with current technology). However, the larger concern is that with the promising tracks extracted to date, analysis was taken as far as it could go without irrevocably damaging the particle (of which there are very few truly believed to be interstellar). The current quandary upon the team therefore is - should all analysis stop until technology allows for safer analysis of such precious specimens, or should we extract a few more and analyze them knowing that they might be damaged so badly they are lost forever? In any event, I think you'll be hearing more about all of this soon!

In the meantime, I'll take the list of tracks put forth here and see if something more can be said about them.

Thanks,

Dan

UPDATE: Dr. Westphal is personally reviewing all the movies promoted to the Alpha List and hopes to finish his current review in about two weeks. If some nice Alpha team member out there doesn't mind checking to make sure these movies have been promoted, that would be terrific! If not, I might be able to get to it next week.
