Someone gone mad with the cookie-cutter?....542893V1

I've seen a few small features that looked like full-depth 'holes' in the aerogel, but nothing as big and straight-sided as this. Although there's a few small fragments within the apparent 'hole' focussing at the same level as the surrounding surface, how could it be something so bright on the surface? - the aerogel is lit from below as far as I can understand.

Any ideas?

Hi jsmaje,

Read this short thread. It explains some of the lighting problems.

They do try to use some lighting from the top and sides, so that bright object in the movie is surely reflecting light from the top source.

(just another link, may be more to do with comet than IS dust.)

Thanks,

fjgiie

ps: Someone earlier suggested that the paint was flaking off the microscope ! :) Who knows -

Fjgiie, thanks for that link - I hadn't realised they used top and side lighting as well. Still doesn't explain what that huge (well, sub-millimetre) thing could be: a sliver of aerogel probably, but how could that happen physically?

I got some sort of java(script?) error a few times while a movie as loading, then it stopped, partly loaded. I hit refresh and got a movie, which was like one I had not seen before, everything was light gizmos. So I log it here in case it is interesting, 6802226V1. There was nothing I'd call a track.

I've seen that sort of thing a few times, and can only imagine it's something to do with the lighting conditions when they make the movies. Some other discussion and a good link here (see albutterworth): http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... .php?t=131

The focus is too deep, There still could be tracks though, some have been found on such movies before.

Has anyone posted this nice mystic illumination effect?
Therein appears also a dolphin-like head.
