Did you ever watch a Shuttle start live at the Kennedy Space Center? It must be very impressive when you can directly watch it from the Launche Viewing Site. Suppose you can even feel a "nice" vibration in your body there. I guess the only problem is to get a ticket before it's sold out.

The possibility to watch NASA TV around the world on the internet is a great service! The only thing that I wish for is to get it now with more bits per second. Is the rate in the USA 150 kbit/s too?

Apropos body vibrations: In my vicinity there is a gliding airfield that held a little airshow on the occasion of an anniversary years ago. They got also invited an F18-Hornet from the Army to show some nice flights over the location (which isn't and also coudn't be fenced in). Usually, to protect the visitors, they fly always parallel to them and if possible over empty areas. So to get the ultimate show you had to stay in the right position on a field path outside of the airfield. 8)
And really, the F18 flew several times towards my (lonely) place in order to rise or turn there again - Even two times by using the afterburner at a distance of about 150 meters over me. What caused a lot of vibrations too, besides the thunderous noise.

There was an earlier image of Saturn in the bright sun with high contrast rings but I could not lay my hands on it right now. It was my desktop for months. Made one dizzy to walk by and look at it.

[edit] Here it is- CLICK on the image to see clearly. http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA08362 this site

Just a little guessing game:

Does anybody know what region lies behind/below the Shuttle in that image (north is to the right)? You get the full resolution image (1,8MB) by clicking on. The full res is rotated 90 degrees.

This is above the Swiss Alps. The large lake below the shuttle's right wingtip is the lake of Zurich.

:) You're right, most of the background shows Switzerland. While performing the pitch maneuver the Shuttle/ISS flew some time over it. The river (Rhine) behind the right/upper wing is the borderline to Germany. Btw. do you know the Rhine Falls (it is visible at the edge of the image).

This published high res from the maneuver sweeped me off my feet then. I tried then to enhance a little the visibility of the background.

Greutis' homes are just covered from the Shuttle and outside of the image. Only my sister's home at the Lake Lucerne is "visible".
