Describe the universe in one word...

What about MARVIN, oh, and NO TEA please.DustBuster wrote:OK Nikita, you may not be the only one to wonder about 42; and we'll encourage Jakson to explain- but it's related to why having and extra arm and head can not only help you search for StarDust, but also help you become President of the Universe!Nikita wrote:OK Jakson, I know I'm not the only one to wonder what 42 is about. Or at least I'm hoping I'm not the only one who doesn't understand!
Could you offer a meaning?
Thanks!
Singularity.
a point at which the derivative of a given function of a complex variable does not exist but every neighborhood of which contains points for which the derivative does exist
a point or region of infinite mass density at which space and time are infinitely distorted by gravitational forces and which is held to be the final state of matter falling into a black hole
I realize this is for fun, but it amazes me that alot of people describe the unvierse based on its size rather than its content.

42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything although noone knows what the actual question is. It is not the meaning of life or the answer to the universe although it is often misconcieved as such. It comes from the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams (This is bad. I had to look up how to spell Douglas), a triology of 5 books, a 5 series radio show, 1 series tv and recently a film. Generally all round cult phenonenom. . (and I think thats spelt wrong too!)
As for my word
"misunderstood"
I mean did anyone ask if it wanted all these laws and rules?
or you could simply mean that we know almost nothing about it.
I like ambiguity

Brobdingnagian \brob-ding-NAG-ee-uhn\, adjective:
Of extraordinary size; gigantic; enormous.

Weren't the Brobdingnagians the giants that Gulliver met up with in Gulliver's Travels?

Joecor99,
And so you are right! The adjective form came from the dictionary. Now the question is, did Swift create the noun, or did he use the adjective as a noun? I suspect that he created it, but I don't know the history of the english language.
Good job! I'm still being educated on the word!

From dust we come
Nikita-
The word originated with Swift. It came from his name for the country that the giants lived in: Brobdingnag. His name for the little people has also come into common usage as a definition of something very small: Lilliputian, after his country of Lilliput, where everything was very small.
