Why have SO MANY calibration movies been included? I'm getting impatient with them, since I have the impression they're primarily to further the rankings game. I'd rather spend the time looking at the real deal....

think of them as check samples

With most types of analysis, frequent (up to 20%) check samples are run to ensure precision and accuracy. In a study where there is a variety of experience, calibration movies help make sure eveyone is on the same page with respect to what they are looking for. Since the researchers want a more random distribution of calibration movies sometimes you get a bunch in a row.
