Is this a Track?

Post by Jakson »

Look at this movie

http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ... e_id=46781

Below the fragment in the right lower corner there is something circular shaped.

This movie has been viewed 10 times but no one has marked it.

What do you think

There is something 25 microns from the right and almost half way up. It is small but comes into focus about 10 frames from the bottom.

Taken in the context of the rest of the gel in that location, it looks to me to be a surface feature rather than a track. Just my two, near-sighted cents... ;-)

I think there might be, as the topic starter stated look at the blob of aerogel in the lower right corner. Since this is on top of the gel, the surface focus is higher there. Then when going down the rest of the movie comes into focus but you also go down into the blob.
And there in the middle you see something wich might be a track.
I should click it...

It's something interesting...

I see what you mean. I almost missed it, because it's pretty much exactly in the middle of that large "stone". I can't imagine what would make that almost perfect circle. Nice find. I'm curious to hear what the team thinks it is.

I think the focus on this movie is a bit borked; you can see the surface focus sliding from left to right as you move the slider down. As such, the right edge is only in focus at the seventh-to-bottom(?) frame. It tripped me up for a second though, too.

As for the initial question, I'd say that's an imperfection or some other bric-a-brac below the glob of aerogel sitting on top, since judging by the focus, I'd say it's right on the surface.

That was also my advisement.

The Stone must bee a little higher then the rest of the surface.
So if there would be a track it would stop sooner.

Nice find. I think it could be a track piercing through that aerogel fragment, but I can't say for sure. Needs a closer look, or perhaps changing the focus to a bit deeper to confirm or not the presence of a particle.

good luck @ dusting!

It's clearly spreading out, that is, getting more blurry, as you go down. There is a bright bump or something on the gel fragment surrounded by dark when focused above the surface, and it gets bigger below. I wouldn't have marked it myself.
