yakmin: at first glance it has the characterstics of a track, however I notice a lot of the rest of debris seems to be in focus at the same point, even if it is at the bottom of the focus - the entire movie might not be focused properly to get a good top to bottom range.

That said, I probably would have clicked on it anyway.

Here's my potential particle track. Its in the top left hand region of the slide. I'm the only one to agree out of 4 people however (though, they could be just rushing point-grabbers) I see the characteristics of a track, it's smaller than the examples, but anything is possible.

Examples of what I think the stardust tracks look like

Post by Sasari »

I've seen test images with tracks like this and have answered them correctly.

These tracks are even smaller than that on the tutorial. They don't really give the ring effect you see on a majority of the test images.

But here are a few real examples of what I believe are tracks and are similar to some tests I have seen.

It almost looks like you focus down and see a small well focused dot the size of a grain of sand on your screen.

I think i found something interesting on 10941b. I looked down and it was not a test plate. How do i check if what i saw was a particle?

Hmmm... there doesn't seem to be a discernible track, as such, in those...
=> no impact trajectory??
=> ...is it possible that that is a kind of flaw suspended in the aerogel, some sort of contaminant from manufacture?

would be nice to have the expert line on such candidates. :)
Twinkle, twinkle, little dust!
How I wonder which to trust!
From stars above the world you fell!
Buried like treasure in aerogel.

I don't agree, the track made would surely have a larger radius than that.
The examples made shot particles @ 20km/s, i think these speeds would be similar to the impacts that occured on the mission.

I've been reporting these, but if they are indeed tracks I've already found 10+, which seems odd, including 3 in a single movie. If they are tracks I guess UCB has hit the motherlode, since I thought I heard they were expecting only 40-100 total for the whole project?

Looks similar in diameter to the one I spotted, about 5 microns wide. I would have clicked on that

The thing is though is that there are examples that look exactly like these. The next one I come upon I'll record the movie ID.
