Alright, here's my question about the Genesis probe. Why did they use such materials as gold and ruby along with the silica plates. To me that seemed a bit more for flash. As far as I can tell, the collection process would potentially cause small defects in the crystaline structure of the plates and...

Re: Wrote an newsarticle about Stardust@home on wikinews

I also watched something similar, I think it was for some solar probe though, that used some sort of collection plates (probably aerogel as well), and they trained movie stuntment to catch it with some sort of catching thing on a helicopter. They passed with "flying" colors, until the act...

Nikita, well said. However, when the forums are only 186 people out of 115,000, I don't think it has much impact on morale, only time will tell. Excellent post though. Alright, this is something I kinda feel should be brought up. If for nothing other then to explain why there are only 186 forum mem...

Re: It's not whether you win, it's how you play the game!

Hey everyone! I have been reading the posts on this thread with great interest. While we all would LOVE to find a track and have naming rights, this is not the purpose of this mission. Many of you are concerned with statistical odds of finding a particle. I would suggest to everyone that we are abo...

I'm personally in this for the science as well, but I would like to know immediately if I'm seeing ghosts in the glass or not picking out some of the finer trails. This is something I will be doing in my proffesional carrer as a geologist... well, probably not looking for interstellar dust grains in...

Speaking of media attention, about three weeks ago I was visiting my mom in LA. She's sight-impaired (used because "blind" seems to be synonymous with "sightless"), so we took the bus around. One night, we were on the Metro 156, and I saw a program on Stardust. Of course, that's...

From what I can tell from the response by a researcher here, we will probably be ranked based on our calibration scores.

I was actually beginning to worry that they wouldn't send the email to a free email account. In fact, I was planning on also preregistering with my Plattsburgh account just to insure I get it, but they shut down preregistration before I could. If you look at the news on the main site, you'll see tha...

We probably won't be able to tell until some sort of radioactive dating thermochronology is done. Otherwise, it will all look the same to us.

My dad has been pretty supportive, as well as interested in the project. My brother, not so much, but I really haven't talked to him about it. They have been a lot more receptive to this project then some of my other searches. Studying sandstones and limestones in depth just doesn't interest them mu...

That doesn't sound like an OS problem. I would suggest updating your JavaScript engine or your browser if they are not up to date. Otherwise, check to see that you have Java and JavaScript enabled. What browser are you using?

Sounds perfectly...er...sound to me! Actually, and here is that cool math you were looking for, consider that 1 or many dust particles can impact a single section covered by a movie. Therefore, to actually determine an accuate chance of finding a dust particle, you would probably have to lo...
