Re: Clarification

Will all the images be taken from the exposed surface traveling inward? Yes. My second question: Will the angles vary greatly from impact to impact, or do we expect to find most particles traveling nearly perpendicular to the impact surface? I also posed this question in the VM help section, but go...

Dust Bunnies?

First Stardust Particle Found!

You can all rest easy now. I found the first particle while perusing some images on the server. I also realized George Foreman had invented the perfect naming system years ago. Here for your astonishment and awe, I give you the first StarDust particle: http://www.thisbandforhire.com/images/idc_me.jpg

The original forecast was about 6 months- a mere fraction of the twenty or so years if the return samples were examined traditionally.
There are a lot of variables though, even with a flawless performance on the technical end.

That's the question of the day! I've read elsewhere on the board about a 2 week window while images are scanned, etc. As for testing/registering, our SysAdmin had this to say: "Hi, At the moment we have no plans for people to be able to test and register before the Virtual Microscope goes live....

If the actual VM is like the tutorials (I think so), the images are simply pre-loaded and made navigable by the sliders by using JavaScript. If you wanted to save an image of a track, you would only need to save the focused image by right-click/save as... and I believe all the images have a unique n...

Hi All, one question or request. In the Tutorial Session, movie # 11, 60 microns to the left of "below surface" There are some similiar pits(?) on movie #7 the same distance over and down just about as much. If these are truly tracks, the particles are extremely small, and possibly not bi...

I apologize if I sounded like an a**hat for saying that. We are suppsed to have fun doing this. The StarDust team has already pulled off quite a feat getting the collector back to Earth; I'm sure they will work this out. An alternative discovery/naming idea; A lottery based on number of samples scan...

I beginning to feel that the best idea would be to drop the discovery/naming rights period. This task is far too important to jeopardize and backlog the data with people solely concerned with finding/naming a particle or those who would 'click, click, click' in an effort to do the same. THIS IS NOT ...

I don't think I am as excited about finding a particle as I am intrigued by the whole concept of Stardust@home and the Virtual Microscope. Nothing seems more 'futuristic society' (read 'Star Trek') than peoples from all over the world coming together for one cause that benefits us all. Admittedly, t...

What to expect

Greetings! In the training focus movies, it seemed most particle track examples came from a nearly head-on impact (at least from the VM's view angle, and as compared to the focus movie from the Russian space station sample; which seemed like an angular impact). What should we expect from samples we ...
