Re: Saying a sad goodbye to friends
Oh Evelyn, so sorry to hear about your health issues. I too had to retire from dusting some time ago (coming up to a mere 70) but have retained my interest, including in your contributions to the telecons and excellent summaries. Will you not be able to continue those either? As an atheist I don't p...

Re: Third Thursday Telecons
Thanks Dr. Westphal for confirming my suspicion that the aerogel/foil frequency disparity is most likely due to there actually having been many more of the really small ISPs than predicted (~ 0.01 microns or less). What in fact was the predicted size/speed range of particles that the aerogel tiles a...

Re: Third Thursday Telecons
Thanks Dr Westphal for that really informative telecon, and Evelyn for your transcription. I’d almost given up any interest in SD@H, despite having joined 10 years ago. I was surprised to learn that the so-delicately-extracted miniature aerogel keystones were then subjected to the indignity of being...

Re: Rosetta/Philae spacecraft success
So, it's finally R.I.P. Rosetta, having joined her daughter Philae on the surface of comet 67P: http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Rosetta I watched the live esa broadcast during the final moments of this 12 yr project, which were quite emotional. To have made a slow crash at the planne...

Thanks McAngus - saves me the expense of a transatlantic trip.
It's good to peek inside where the science actually happens, and put faces to names. In particular, Anna looks very jolly and Dan unexpectedly handsome!

Re: Third Thursday Telecons
Dan, the last recorded Telecon I could listen to (via the News page) was in June. How can I listen to those in July, August & now September which haven't been posted there? Were they not recorded?

Re: Rosetta/Philae spacecraft success
She was long lost but now found:

And mother craft Rosetta is planned to (slowly) crash land at the end of this month, so more exciting data and videos to come.

Re: Visit to CERN
Eric – it's good to know that you share my interest in the LHC, and I'd be interested to read your essay; but how do I find it on that ‘studymode’ site? As well as the many large aspects of the project, both engineering and scientific-wise, I was equally struck when visiting by how small some of the...

Re: "There's a problem with this focus movie"
Thanks again Dan, and credit to Robert for realising his error.
Because I don't find dusting easy now, I'll probably wait until the 2017 re-build before reconsidering.

Re: "There's a problem with this focus movie"
Thanks for that Dan. But just what sort of algorithm are you referring to that the team use and are apparently happy with? I thought calibration tracks were Photoshopped (or whatever) by hand, originally by Anna Butterworth I recall, who would put it within-frame and accurately register the coordina...

Re: "There's a problem with this focus movie"
Dan, someone somewhere within the team will have actually made that particular PM: http://aerogel.ssl.berkeley.edu/powermissedviewer.php?movie_vm=820648V1&theX=354&theY=-2, and will know where exactly what and where the supposed 'track' is. You are better placed than us to get an answer, so ...

Re: "There's a problem with this focus movie"
I needed very high magnification to see it, but could it be that pale blob immediately below dust mote Larry, at ~362/5, looking like a Heidelberger to me?

Re: ALZ@home problem
Some of you (the usual suspects of course!) seem to have access to the ALZ@Home test site, but I can't find the URL. As far as I can see, the latest telecon only gives a link to the Feedback site, for which providing my SD@H details didn't work anyway. Nor is it listed on Google. I must have missed ...

Re: Third Thursday Telecons
Thanks Andrew for the update video about the Cornell project. For me at least it was very blurred, and together with the small size of the demo shots very little was visually interpretable, but I got the gist. I don't get the zebra thing though. Are we thought too infantile to appreciate linear move...
