At first glance it sure looks like a track but after few more focus rolls and looking at the other stuff just starting to come into focus, it does appear to be a surface "pit" and not a track. Sure does look like it at first though

Thats a good find, and from it's appearance, I'd say a good chance that it is a track that happened to come in at an angle, instead of at right angles to the aerogel surface. If the particle was relatively heavy and of some fairly dense substance, it would not necessarily vaporize ( and leave a &quo...

I looked at this one a few times Driven1, and and it does appear that it is a particle sitting on the surface which you are hitting just at the bottom focus scale. So I'd flag that one as bad focus too. As the others have mentioned, I don't think anyone has yet encountered a big classic "bubble...

I see it and would flag it. It may be one of the "inclusions" we've been told about, but till' then...

To sumarize then (and yes I did see all 3, not quite enough focus to resolve them), these are definately subsurface particles. They are probably "inclusions" from manufacturing, but since we don't know yet for sure, keep on flagging them so they can be looked at later by the project staff ...

The right side of the field looks usable, but I didn't see anything there.

Need more technically advanced FAQ/tutorial/feedback

I suspect there just might be guys or gals participating in this experiment who actually have years of lab experience and who have spent many hours becoming bleary-eyed behind many sorts of microscopes. As a guy at the incredibly old age of 51 with experience in Microscopy, some of these excercises ...

"Bad Focus" Criteria

What is the approximate focus range of the VM from top to bottom of the virtual focus? I will flag the movie for "bad focus" if the focus is too close to bottom scale as I cannot focus far enough thru the aerogel to reveal any particle strikes.
