Update: 13 May 2009 - What are we up to?

Hi Everyone, It has been some time since I gave you all a status on the Stardust@home search and team. There were some big events for the team: -On December 13th, 2008 Dr. Anna Butterworth and her husband, Matt Paul, welcomed their second child into the world, a bouncing baby boy. She took a materni...

Hi All, Based on what we have seen so far, there is no reason to expect the need to identify more than one feature in a single focus movie. The only examples we've seen of clustered strikes are high angle tracks that are likely results of ricochets off of the aft solar panels. Current thinking is th...

Re: Why cant this be done with software?

Hi, why cant the individual frames be used to create 3d models of the gel cells with software? I believe some dusters have tried to create similar visualizations. It's not clear that such visualizations would allow any better analysis, however. But, it's always good to consider possibilities. -Bryan

Oh right, but can I suggest all team bloggers tell us which one they are by name, Project Director or not? To be honest, I've never quite seen the point of the Blog. To my mind, it has added nothing (other than looking prettier) to the equivalent forum Updates section, which had been of regu...

Hi All, I have a small update on this. It seems that luckily Ike did not cause any significant damage or flooding at JSC, and the SD collectors are just fine. However, operations at JSC remain slowed down because many of the personnel have had to deal with damage done to their homes, etc. Our though...

Hi All, So far as I am aware, I don't believe any new CMs have been added to the system since we began Phase 2. If you are seeing ones that you hadn't before my first inclination is to think that it is just the random nature of randomly picking from the pool of thousands of CMs. Also, if there is an...

Hi Howie, Welcome back. Things are quiet around here for sure. But there isn't any new data to review so most of the work to be done right now is refining what has been done so far. The team here is working hard on extracting and analyzing candidates from the alpha list. We have also scanned new til...

Re: Slow Virtual Microscope

The Virtual Microscope has been unusable for me the last several days. The movies sometimes won't load and sometimes load very slowly. All my other web sites are fine. I even cut my security off and the movies are still taking a couple of minutes to load. fjgiie Okay, I'll let Will and Robert know....

Attention: Stardust@home Dusters from Ohio

I've been contacted by a radio reporter in Ohio who is putting together a show about citizen science in Ohio. He's interested in interviewing Stardust@home participants from Ohio for the show. If you are in Ohio and would like to talk with him, please contact him before August 9th: Jonathan Hickman ...

I'm glad it's working now, but don't know of anything that could have caused the problem.

I've sent a message to Will and Robert so that they might figure out what went wrong.

Thanks,
-Bryan

Hi Bernard, John is absolutely correct. The calibration tracks are based on only a few of the pre-project test particle firings and phase 1 candidates. They are randomly resized and rotated to create a few thousand possible calibration movies. I believe MatLab is the program used to insert them into...

Hi All, Startrak, I checked out that article. One of the key parameters in determining the age of the Universe is the Hubble constant. It's the expansion rate of the Universe. Turns out that it is not constant in time, but it a constant in space at any given time. The age of the Universe depends on ...

You'll note in today's blog from Andrew that a few of the candidates that were being extracted turned out to be nothing, but that wasn't clear until we dug in and started the extraction process. May I venture to suggest (as stated here ) that, whilst this may have come as a surprise to the team, it...
